Time to lay ghost of ABSA Cup past to rest- Sibeko

Saturday’s ABSA Cup last sixteen game poses many questions for The Amakhosi, who will want to answer those questions on the field at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

Chiefs aim to coast past City Pillars and into the quarterfinals of the ABSA Cup.

Since the change of sponsor back in 2003 from the old BOB Save Super Bowl to the ABSA Cup, Chiefs are yet to go beyond the stage of sixteen and into the quarterfinal.

Having twice been beaten by Ajax Cape Town in 2003 and then again in 2004 at the last sixteen stage, as well as being bundled out of the competition by last season’s finalists, Wits University via the penalty shoot out in 2005, Chief’s midfielder Gerald Sibeko, who slotted his kick home from the spot against Wits in last year’s shoot out defeat, feels it is time for Chiefs to put their previous failures in the ABSA Cup behind them and race onto the final.

“These demons that seem to be our undoing at this stage of the competition need to be exorcised and the time has come for us to finally engrave our name on the trophy” added Sibeko.

With Chiefs experiencing a number of injuries and various players missing through suspensions and personal matters, Gerald believes that a number of fringe players will be looking to stake their claim in the Chiefs starting eleven for the rest of the season with a comprehensive victory over Pillars. Sibeko said “like myself, there will be a number of us, due to certain circumstances, who will be getting a look in against Pillars.

Our aim is to do a good job so that we can remain permanent fixtures within the team for the rest of the season. I believe we have thirty players who can be called upon at any time and do the job for the team”.

Gerald Sibeko and company get the chance to go where Ted Dumitru failed to reach twice previously - and that is the ABSA Cup quarterfinals. Chiefs will be out to demolish Pillars at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening to ensure their place in next week’s draw for the ABSA Cup quarterfinals.
