Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka was disappointed with the fact that Amakhosi were bundled out of the Telkom Knockout Cup at the semifinal stage on Sunday afternoon against Maritzburg United, and would like nothing more than to get back to winning ways when Chiefs travel to Cape Town to face Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday evening at the Cape Town Stadium. Kick-off is at 19:30.
“To fall out of a tournament where you had high hopes and especially that the team was doing well in, was not a good feeling,” says Maluleka. “We did not live up to expectations. Both the result and the performance were not what we would have wanted, for us and our fans.”
Maluleka has played in ten of Chiefs eleven Absa Premiership games this season and has featured in 128 league games for the club since joining Chiefs back in the 2013/14 season. He is now focusing on making his and the team’s trip to Cape Town a successful one.
“We have Stellenbosch next on our hands and we really need to get a result there to keep the momentum going,” he adds. “The guys know what is at stake we can learn a lot from Sunday’s game as heart breaking as it was, this is a new ball game and we have to work hard on Wednesday.”
The Chiefs midfield maestro has been through disappointments in the past but feels that there has been a lot of positives on which the Amakhosi can build this season, given that they currently head up the table and he is looking at history towards guiding him through the season as he maintains that Chiefs need to remain grounded for the rest of the campaign.
Maluleka is a league winner with Chiefs in 2014/15 is taking lessons out of that campaign as he targets more success with Chiefs this season.
“There is a wonderful team spirit amongst the guys and a lot of fight. Those are two elements that come to mind when I look at 2014/15. We have more than what it takes to be successful. We have the players and the talent. It’s still early days but our remaining three league games of the year will be very important for us. We need to stick together and win as many points as possible,” he emphasized.
He is also under no illusions that Wednesday’s assignment will be an easy one for Chiefs. He says: “We expect a similarly tough and challenging game to the one we had on Sunday against Maritzburg. This game is in one of our back yards Cape Town. It’s a big plus for our fans have done so well for us we really appreciate this. There is no easy game, we need to show up and this is why we are Kaizer Chiefs and we need to show that.”
Maluleka would like nothing more than for Chiefs to extend their current winning run in the league to seven games. Should the team manage a win, it will the first time that Amakhosi had won seven successive league games since the 2014/15 season. “Yes” was Maluleka’s curt answer when quizzed whether Chiefs will be able to keep up their winning running in the league.
