The result effectively denied Chiefs a chance of defending their title in the lucrative BP Top Eight.
Although Pirates were leading 1-0 at the break, Wits
goalkeeper-coach Roger de Sa made a clever substitution in the second half to cancel out Pollen Ndlanya's 39th minute goal.
De Sa brought on Oscar Mohohlo for Ivan Winstanley after 63
minutes and that changed the complexion of the game.
Five minutes after the change, Mohohlo equalised with a header after receiving a square pass from Ashley Makhanya.
Another Wits substitute, Gareth Devine (for Manqoba Ngwenya) put the Students ahead with another header in the 79th minute when he beat Bucs 'keeper William Okpara hands down.
As if this was not enough for the Clever Boys, midfielder
Charles Yohane made sure that Chiefs supporters went home crying by scoring Wits' third goal (86min) after being laid on by Devine.
For Chiefs, this year will mark the first since 1972 that the
glamour Johannesburg club will not have contested a domestic cup competition.
Pirates finished the season in third place on 57 points behind
Cape Town club Santos (64) and Supersport United (59).
Wits in effect pushed Chiefs out of the top eight as they moved up from ninth on the log to seventh (50 points).
