Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s brace ensured that Kaizer Chiefs maintained their 100 percent start to the season with their sixth win out of six matches in the Absa Premiership when they defeated the University of Pretoria 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.

Geoffrey Massa netted from the penalty spot to give his side an equaliser but it was in vain as they lost their first match away from home this season.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter recalled his tried and tested generals in Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker, Siyabonga Nkosi and Morgan Gould to the starting eleven for the first time this season, in a much changed line-up from the usual one seen in the infant stages of this season. Brilliant Khuzwayo, meanwhile, got the nod ahead of Riyaad Pieterse to the replace injured Itumeleng Khune.

Chiefs had a great opportunity to take the lead in the 18th minute when Kingston Nkhatha’s shot was saved at close range by AmaTuks keeper Washington Arubi.

Within the same phase of attack the ball was recycled with Tshabalala back heeling the ball to Letsholonyane who drilled a low shot to give his side the lead.

Midway through the first half Tshabalala tried to go from providing an assist to finding the back of the net when he tested Arubi’s resolve with a fierce left-footed shot on the edge of the box but his effort just went marginally high off target.

The away side was brought back into the match when Khuzwayo was beaten for pace and caused a penalty. Massa made no mistake from 1 -yards out as he thundered his shot into the back of the net to level matters for the capital city side.

In the 54th minute, the Chiefs defence was split open by the AmaTuks attackers. which resulted in the ball falling on the path of Ntombayithethi. He cracked a long-rage effort which looked goal bound and deceiving in flight but Khuzwayo stupendously punched it over the bar.

Chiefs reclaimed the lead in the 70th minute through Letsholonyane when Nkhatha hustled the AmaTuks defence after a ball which was threaded into the box fell on the path of the man affectionately known as Yeye and the former Jomo Cosmos midfielder made no mistake from range to make it 2-1.

Five minutes from time substitute Mandla Masango should have made the game safe for the Glamour Boys after a well worked counter attack, but the Bafana Bafana winger curled his shot just wide off the mark as the match ended 2-1 with Chiefs recording their best start to the league in the PSL era.
