Kaizer Chiefs will switch their home base from Rustenburg to Johannesburg's Ellis Park Stadium in the new season, according to the club's financial manager Jason Raine.

Amakhosi only played three matches at Ellis Park last season - 2-1 defeat against Castle Premiership runners-up, Supersport United, on September 11 last year, the 2-0 victory over Sundowns on January 11 and finally a 3-0 humiliation against Black Leopards on April 14.

The Glamour Boys had initially said it was not financially viable for them to use Ellis Park. Stringent regulations were implemented at the Lions rugby base following the Ellis Park soccer disaster on April 11 two years ago.

Chiefs took a decision to return to Ellis Park after successful negotiations with the stadium management.

"We are based in Johannesburg and that's where we should play our home games. In addition the Ellis Park Stadium is a world-class stadium and we are a world-class brand and there's no reason why the two cannot be together," said Raine.

"It has also been financially taxing for our supporters to travel to and from Rustenburg and we hope they will come in great numbers to support the team next season."

A poll that was recently conducted on the Amakhosi site asking supporters where they wanted to see their club playing their home games next season, showed an overwhelming number in favour of the Glamour Boys returning to Joburg.

Amakhosi moved out of Olympia Park in March "for public safety reasons" and to allow the stadium management time to renovate some of the key points at the venue. Currently Olympia Park will be the alternative venue for games which cannot be staged at Ellis Park.

Chiefs, who will arrive from South Korea on Friday morning, are scheduled to start their league campaign with a home clash against Sundowns on August 23.

This announcement by Chiefs means there will be no Premiership football in Rustenburg next season after rival Orlando Pirates announced their move to Joburg Stadium. The league champions were based in Rustenburg's Sports Palace.

Jomo Cosmos were the first PSL team to move away from Rustenburg two season's ago in favour of Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa.

Meanwhile, Ajax Cape Town will announce their new home ground to the media on Friday, as they also bid farewell to Newlands Stadium. The Urban Warriors, who cited lack of success at this rugby venue as reason for their decision, are likely to occupy the Green Point Stadium.

Ajax will play against city rivals Santos in a curtain raiser to the International Club Bid Challenge between Chiefs and English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur. That could also be an official farewell to Newlands by the Urban Warriors.

Cape Town has three teams in the professional league. Santos and Hellenic have used Athlone and Green Point but the two have preferred a refurbished Athlone for most of their games.

Elsewhere, SuperSport United have announced that they will play their home games at Loftus Stadium, which was initially used by archrivals Sundowns. United administration manager Jerry Warie said the club would still use HM Pitje Stadium but as an alternative venue.
