Kaizer Chiefs (1) 1 (Parker 10’)

Orlando Pirates 0

What Happened?

Kaizer Chiefs won the Carling Black Label Champion Cup thanks to beating Orlando Pirates 1-0 in an enthralling game.

The supporters decided on the line-up and it looked as if they got it right as Amakhosi went off to a flyer, getting in front already in the 10th minute thanks to a goal from Bernard ‘Die Hond’ Parker.

The striker neatly finished after a well-weighted cross from the left by Gustavo Páez.

Emmanuel Letlotlo, Siphiwe Tshabalala and George Lebese were selected to start by the voters, but they couldn’t take part in the game due to injury. They were replaced by George Maluleka, Hendrick Ekstein and Joseph Molangoane.

Páez and Parker were a nuisance up-front, creating all kinds of trouble for the Buccaneers defence, while Ekstein did great in midfield.

Meanwhile, Chiefs kept it tight at the back and Itumeleng Khune had a quiet first half.

Amakhosi should have extended the lead with at least two or three goals in the first half, but it wasn’t to be. Parker, Molangoane and George Maluleka all got fine opportunities to score.

There was also a good shout for a penalty, when Páez looked to have been brought down by a Buccaneer, but referee Cedric Muvhali not to give, despite a huge uproar from the crowd.

The voters decided that Ryan Moon had to come on for Chiefs early in the second half, replacing Molangoane.

The Glamour Boys continued to be the better side, although the Pirates coach tried to change the momentum by making a lot of changes to his team.

It seemed to affect a bit the rhythm and flow of the game. As a result of this, the Buccaneers got some opportunities to equalise.

In the end, Amakhosi were the better side and fully deserved the win.

Key moment in the match:

That must obviously have been the opening goal scored by Bernard Parker. Kaizer Chiefs had already started the game on a high note, but after the goal from ‘Die Hond’ it was one-direction traffic in the first half.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

It was a close call between Gustavo Páez and Bernard Parker, but ‘Die Hond’ slightly had the upper hand. Parker had a fantastic game, being a constant threat to the Pirates defenders. The striker was also involved in most of the Chiefs moves forwards. And, not important, Parker scored the winner. Let’s hope ‘Die Hond’ can take his present great form into the season.
