A dream start – Malope

Khotso Malope made his debut for Kaizer Chiefs’ first team against Maritzburg United on Wednesday evening. He did well, proudly wearing the number 35 jersey. “It was a dream start,” reflects the 23-year-old midfielder.

The youngster comes from Amakhosi’s youth development structures. He was loaned out two seasons ago to Moroka Swallows, while he helped Thando Royal Zulu win the first division title last season with some impressive performances.

Malope has great vision and an eye for the pass, whilst he is comfortable on the ball with both feet.

On Monday, coach Steve Komphela told the midfielder: “Be ready for Wednesday.”

“I was nervous when I heard that,” Malope remembers. However, during the Maritzburg United clash, there were few signs of nervousness. “I was looking forward to start in an official match for Chiefs.

About the 2-0 win, the Benoni-born midfielder comments: “We played against Maritzburg according to the coach’s instructions.”

Next up for Amakhosi is the Absa Premiership fixture against Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening, 23 September (kick-off is at 20:00).

With George Maluleka still being out with injury, Malope might get another start. “From here on, I will take it one game at a time,” he says, displaying enduring modesty about talking of his chances to make the team against Arrows. “For the moment, I am happy that we beat Maritzburg. Thanks and glory to God. Thank you also to the Amakhosi Family for their support. This is a dream come true!”
