Since making his Chiefs debut in a league win over Maritzburg United in March 2019 the signs have been there that Nkosingiphile Ngcobo would play a pivotal role in managing the Chiefs midfield. The 21 year old midfield wizard has begun to live up to that billing this season as he has come into his own, making 34 appearances for Chiefs in all competitions and contributing with four goals. For the young midfield dynamo the aim is to continue to improve and he is looking forward to helping his team climb up the league standings when they face Bloemfontein Celtic away from home in a DStv Premiership game on Saturday at 15h00.
While he was absent from Chiefs' recent win against Mamelodi Sundowns he did return for Wednesday’s 1-0 home loss to Chippa United. He was not happy with the way things went as he made his 22nd league appearance of the season against the Chilli Boys. “I missed the game against Sundowns and I think as a team we did very well. We played with confidence and we applied the plan correctly and managed to get three points. I came back against Chippa United and things did not go our way and we lost the game”.
Ngcobo feels that Chiefs could have picked up the maximum number of points against Chippa but were left to ponder of what could have been. As he reflected on the Chippa loss, “I think we should have scored in the first thirty minutes. We have to focus on our next game against Bloemfontein Celtic, it won’t be easy but we are prepared, and we have to go there and make sure that we get maximum points”.
For Ngcobo the 2020-21 season has been his breakout campaign as he was used sparingly in 2018-19 and 2019-20. While it has been a challenging campaign for Amakhosi, Ngcobo would like to see the team build on the positive aspects of the campaign.
As he said, “as the league is towards the end now it has not been a great season for us as a team but there are a lot of positives we as a team can build on. This season has had many ups and downs, but we have done well in the Champions League. We broke some records in the competition and we just have to keep our heads up and finish the 2020-21 season in a better position”.
A win against Celtic will help Chiefs get their top eight ambitions back on track, and while the trip to the Free State will prove challenging Amakhosi have historically had a good run against Celtic, with Chiefs winning 22 of their previous 43 PSL Era league meetings against them while losing six games and drawing 15.
