“We played well and had opportunities to score more goals,” reflected Ernst Middendorp after having guided Amakhosi to a 1-0 victory over SuperSport United on Wednesday night. “We had limited time to prepare the team but I’m happy to see the immediate progress.”

George Maluleka, who captained the side, scored a beauty to send a half-full Mbombela Stadium into rapture.

“I am well aware of the demands of the supporters,” said Middendorp. “I have one task in mind though and that is to maximize the potential of the team and to bring success to Kaizer Chiefs.

“I am putting in all my energy to get the job done. It feels good to see the supporters happy.”

“Football is no longer a one-man show, there’s so much responsibility,” continued Middendorp. “A lot is also about leadership and the way the team is organised.

“I prefer not to change the starting XI that much. For example, Kgotso Moleko is a good player – however, he’s not registered for CAF, which means that he won’t be available for our next two games and that’s a pity.

“I don’t know at this stage how we will cover the right-back position in CAF with Ramahlwe Mphahlele out injured. But from the footage I saw, Daniel Cardoso came on after ‘Rama’ got injured and did well, so that’s an option.

Middendorp concluded by saying, “The progress will be steady and will not go smooth at all times. For now, it’s one game at the time.

“On Thursday, we will go into training to start preparing for the next important game which is a CAF match.”

Chiefs’ next match is a CAF Confederation Cup encounter against Elgeco Plus of Madagascar. The match is scheduled to take place at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium. Kick-off is at 20:15.
