Betway Premiership, Round 8 (13.10.26)
FNB stadium, Nasrec

Despite maintaining their unbeaten start to the Betway Premiership season, Kaizer Chiefs will feel disappointed to come away from FNB stadium with a 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch on Tuesday evening.

Indeed, they had to come from behind after Sinoxolo Kwayiba had given the visitors the lead early in the second half before Mduduzi Shabalala scored a delightfully cheeky equaliser just before the hour mark. Amakhosi had a strong shout for a penalty in stoppage time at the end but the referee was not swayed into pointing to the spot. The result keeps Chiefs in fourth place in the league standings, with 14 points from eight matches.

Neither side was able to establish any foothold in the opening 20 minutes, somewhat cancelling each other out in a well-contested midfield tussle. Missing the creative ingenuity of Lebohang Maboe and Siphesihle Ndlovu, Reeve Frosler performed admirably as a makeshift midfielder alongside Sibongiseni Mthethwa in fighting for possession.

The closest anyone came in that period was Mfundo Vilakazi, who cut inside from the right and dribbled past two defenders along the edge of the box before having his shot blocked by a third desperate defender after 14 minutes.

Amakhosi had a scare in the 21st minute when Kwayiba struck the upright on a rare Stellenbosch attack.

Chiefs got into their stride as the half progressed and Wandile Duba will feel he ought to have scored in the 30th minute when Mzuduzi Shabalala’s perfectly weighted pass into his path put him in behind the defence but Sage Stephens managed to tip his shot across goal just past the post.

Two minutes later, Vilakazi whipped in a dangerous free kick from the right that had Stephens flapping to clear his lines and he might have given Chiefs the lead had Shabalala found him in space following a lightning counter attack in the 38th minute. However, his measured pass was intercepted and the teams would finish the opening act with no score on the board.

The second half was barely two minutes old when Chiefs were caught cold by a swift passing move down the Stellenbosch left that saw Terrence Mashego play a diagonal ball across the box for Kwayiba to stick out a leg and guide it into the net.

Chiefs responded admirably and their efforts paid off in the 58th minute when Shabalala received a pass over the top of the defence, took defender Siviwe Nkwali out of the game and then fooled Stephens by sliding the ball home at his near post when he was expecting him to go the other way.

From that point both teams tried to grab a deciding goal but generally found the going tough and chances were few and far between.

Chiefs had a strong penalty claim in the dying seconds when substitute, Ethan Chislett headed Frosler’s pass across goal but the referee deemed that the ball came of the leg of defender Adeyanjo Lateef and not his hand. Moments later the final whistle blew and the points were shared.

Attention switches immediately to this weekend’s opening CAF Confederation Cup clash against Red Arrows from Zambia at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday afternoon in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the tournament.
