Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard told the assembled media after Amakhosi’s 0-0 draw against Lamontville Golden Arrows in Nelspruit on Sunday that they didn’t do enough to win a match that was there for the taking.

“It was a fair result,” he said, “They had a couple of chances, especially near the end, but overall, I think we deserved to win it if you look at the balance of the chances.”

That said, Sheppard believes they are doing the right things and are close to clicking into gear.

He added, “We have been getting into the final third, which is where the action happens near the opposition box. Our creativity has been good; it’s just a matter of sticking our chances away. The good thing is that we are creating chances. That’s a positive so we just have to carry on with that.”

Star midfielder, Lebohang Maboe, left the field injured in the second half and Sheppard is hopeful that it’s not too serious.

“The doctors will examine him,” he said. “Obviously, for Lebo to go down, it was clear he was in pain. Hopefully, it’s just a slight ankle sprain, and he’ll be ready for national duty.”

The assistant coach concluded with words of praise for debutant goalkeeper, Renaldo Leaner, who successfully defended his goal throughout and contributed significantly to shutting out a dangerous Arrows attack.

“He was very good. He showed leadership at the back and made a couple of crucial saves to keep us in the game,” Sheppard said, “You know, that’s why we have a squad. When players get injured, other players come in and take their chance. I’m very happy for him. He has come in confident with the right attitude and, as you saw, he kept a clean sheet.”
